The opportunity
Biochar is one of the most scalable, durable ways to remove CO₂ — and India has the feedstock
Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich solid made by heating biomass in a low-oxygen process called pyrolysis. The carbon resists decomposition for centuries, so applying biochar to soil locks away CO₂ that crops had pulled from the air.
India burns vast volumes of crop residue every year. Converting that biomass into biochar turns an air-pollution problem into durable carbon removal, farmer income and healthier soils — each verified tonne issued as a high-integrity carbon-removal credit.
What we do
Everything a biochar carbon project needs, under one roof
Eight independent, vendor-neutral services across the full lifecycle — so your removals are bankable, verifiable and sellable.
Biochar Carbon Project Development
Biochar carbon project development is the end-to-end process of turning a biomass resource into issued, sellable carbon-removal credits. We act as your development partner from first feasibility through to issuance and sale, coordinating feedstock, technology, MRV, registry and offtake as one programme.
Learn moreFeasibility & Feedstock Assessment
A biochar feasibility assessment tests — before you invest — whether your biomass can become viable, durable carbon-removal credits. We map feedstock availability and seasonality, model carbon yield and unit economics, and give you an evidence-based go / no-go.
Learn morePyrolysis Technology & Production Advisory
Pyrolysis technology advisory matches the right production system to your feedstock, scale and end-use. We are vendor-neutral: we help you choose between artisanal, batch and continuous-industrial pyrolysis, set biochar-quality targets, and avoid the equipment decisions that quietly sink carbon projects.
Learn moreBiochar MRV (Digital MRV)
Biochar MRV — measurement, reporting and verification — is how a project proves each tonne of CO₂ it removes. We design conservative, audit-ready MRV systems, including digital MRV (dMRV) that captures production and application data at source so verification is faster and disputes are rarer.
Learn moreValidation, Verification & Registry
Validation and verification are the independent audits that turn a project design into issued credits on a registry. We author the project documents, manage the validation/verification body (VVB), and run the registry listing and issuance process end to end.
Learn moreCredit Sales & Offtake Structuring
Credit sales and offtake structuring connect your durable biochar removals to credible buyers on terms that hold up. We help with pricing strategy, forward and spot offtake contracts, and buyer matchmaking — protecting both price and integrity.
Learn moreAgronomic Biochar & Soil Application
Agronomic biochar advisory realises biochar’s value in the field — soil health, water-holding and yield — alongside carbon. We design application rates, field trials and farmer engagement so soil use is agronomically sound and MRV-compliant.
Learn moreAdvisory, Due Diligence & Training
Beyond full project development, we provide focused advisory: independent due diligence for buyers and investors, expert reviews of existing projects, and training for teams entering the biochar carbon market.

Who we work with
Built for both sides of the market
We sit between Indian supply and global demand — and represent each side's interests with rigour.
Agribusinesses & Crop-Residue Aggregators
If you handle crop residue or agricultural by-products at scale, biochar can turn that biomass into a durable carbon-removal revenue line — instead of a disposal cost or open-field burning. We help agribusinesses and aggregators build bankable, high-integrity biochar projects on the residue they already control.
FPOs & Cooperatives
For Farmer Producer Organisations and cooperatives, biochar offers a rare combination: new income for members, healthier soils, and an end to residue burning. We help FPOs aggregate biomass and member farms into a single, credible biochar carbon project.
Industry with Biomass (Steel, Cement, Sugar, Paper)
Industries that handle large biomass or biogenic-residue streams — sugar, paper and pulp, and energy-intensive sectors like steel and cement — can convert that biomass into durable carbon removals and a credible decarbonisation asset. We help industrial players develop on-site or near-site biochar projects.
Pyrolysis & Gasification Operators
If you already run pyrolysis or gasification equipment, you may be producing biochar — and durable carbon — without monetising it. We help operators turn existing production into issued, sellable carbon-removal credits.
Corporate CDR Buyers
Corporate buyers of durable carbon removal need confidence in every tonne. We provide independent due diligence on biochar removals from India — additionality, permanence, MRV quality and delivery risk — so your portfolio holds up to scrutiny.
Our approach
A clear path from biomass to verified, sellable removals
- 01
Scope & feasibility
We assess feedstock, logistics, technology fit and carbon potential, then model the economics so you decide on evidence.
- 02
Design & methodology
We select the right methodology and registry, set biochar quality and MRV targets, and author the project design.
- 03
Validate & verify
We manage the VVB, registry listing and verification so your removals are independently confirmed and durable.
- 04
Monetise & scale
We structure offtakes, connect credible buyers and support delivery — then help you scale to additional sites.

Questions, answered
Biochar carbon removal — the essentials
Clear answers to the questions developers and buyers ask us most.
What is biochar carbon removal (CDR)?
Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material made by heating biomass — such as crop residues or woody waste — in a low-oxygen process called pyrolysis. Because the carbon resists decomposition for centuries, applying biochar to soil or using it in durable products locks carbon away that would otherwise return to the atmosphere. Each verified tonne of CO₂ removed can be issued as a carbon-removal credit.
Why is India well suited to biochar carbon projects?
India generates enormous volumes of agricultural residue — much of it burned in the open, causing air pollution. Converting that biomass into biochar provides durable carbon removal, additional farmer income, and improved soil health. Combined with relatively low conversion costs, this makes India one of the most promising regions globally for high-integrity biochar CDR.
Which standards and registries do you work with?
We design projects to leading durable-removal standards including Verra VM0044, Puro.earth, Isometric and Gold Standard. We are methodology- and vendor-neutral, selecting the pathway that best fits your feedstock, end-use, geography and target buyers.
How durable are biochar carbon removals?
Biochar permanence is assessed primarily through the hydrogen-to-organic-carbon (H:Corg) ratio, which predicts how long the carbon remains stable. Properly produced biochar typically stores carbon for hundreds to over a thousand years, placing it among the more durable, measurable forms of carbon dioxide removal available today.
Do you help corporate buyers as well as developers?
Yes. Alongside helping developers build and monetise projects, we support corporate buyers with due diligence on durable biochar removals — assessing additionality, permanence, MRV quality and delivery risk before purchase.
How do I start a biochar project with India Biochar?
Begin with a Biochar Project Feasibility Assessment. Tell us about your feedstock, location and goals, and we will evaluate viability, carbon potential and the most suitable registry pathway — giving you a clear, evidence-based decision before you invest.
Is your biomass a viable biochar carbon project?
Start with a Biochar Project Feasibility Assessment. Tell us about your feedstock and goals — we'll tell you, on evidence, whether and how it can become durable carbon-removal credits.
