How a biochar carbon project works
A biochar carbon project turns waste biomass into durable carbon-removal credits across five stages: sourcing biomass, converting it to biochar by pyrolysis, measuring the removal (MRV), verifying it through an independent body and registry, and selling the credits. Here's how each stage works — and how we de-risk it.
The lifecycle

Five stages take a biomass resource to issued, sellable removals. Each links to the service that delivers it.

Biomass sourcing
It starts with sustainable, genuine-waste biomass — crop residues or agro-industrial by-products that would otherwise be burned or left to decompose. We confirm volume, seasonality and an economic collection radius, and screen out anything that drives land-use change or diverts material from existing uses.

Pyrolysis & production
The biomass is heated in a low-oxygen process (pyrolysis), converting roughly half its carbon into stable biochar. Production temperature and residence time set the H:Corg ratio that drives estimated permanence, so technology and quality control matter from the first batch.

MRV — measurement, reporting & verification
Each batch is weighed and sampled; labs measure carbon content and H:Corg; production and application are recorded — increasingly through digital MRV. Baselines, leakage and uncertainty are handled conservatively so the removal claim is defensible.

Validation & verification
An accredited, independent body validates the project design and verifies that the claimed removals actually occurred. The project is listed on a registry — Verra VM0044, Puro.earth or Isometric — and, on successful verification, credits are issued.

Credit sale & delivery
Issued (or forward) removals are sold to credible buyers through spot or offtake contracts. Pricing reflects quality, volume and durability and is always presented as a current estimate — never a guaranteed return.

Two production models
Artisanal vs industrial pyrolysis
Biochar can be produced at farmer scale or industrial scale. Neither is universally better — the right model depends on your feedstock, capital and target volume.
Artisanal production
Dispersed, low-capital, farmer-level
- Flame-curtain kilns and small batch units
- Suits scattered feedstock and smallholder or FPO contexts
- Low capital; manual operation and data capture
- Aggregation and disciplined MRV across many sites is the key challenge
Industrial production
Concentrated, higher-volume, instrumented
- Continuous reactors, often with heat or power recovery
- Suits concentrated, consistent biomass (e.g. mills, large aggregators)
- Higher capital; automated, instrument-grade data capture
- Larger, traceable volumes attractive to corporate buyers
